I read somewhere that the three most popular foreign cuisines in the Philippines are Italian, Japanese and Chinese, and surprisingly, Italian tops that list. I found it hard to believe at first but think about it though: Spaghetti, Lasagna and Pizza. What place have I visited in this country that doesn't know these words? Anyway, I'm not a very big fan of Italian but the place I was invited to last weekend certainly made me a fan!
First off, I would like to congratulation Chef Gelo Obrero for the successful Grand Opening of Angelo's Ristorante last December 8, 2013. It's about time Kagayanons get a taste of authentic (as confirmed by Italians stumbling upon the place and commenting that their food reminded them of home) Italian cuisine. Photos belong to my friend, The Chubby Buddy, James Tubeo.
Ambiance
I bet the pictures, by their selves will describe the ambiance completely. Very elegant and tasteful.
Here are the dishes that we tried:
Pate de Fegato (Chicken Liver Pate) - Php110
A Pate is puréed seasoned meat for those who don't speak the language of Italian food. We had this as an Apertivo (appetizer) and I must say, it was very appetizing! I want to try Baked Caprese next though.
Grilled Watermelon and Octopus - Php180
In Italia, fruits are abundant in their courses. This Insalata (salad) shocked me but it might not, all of you. I could only try the watermelon since I'm allergic to seafood but the effect of the octopus being grilled with he watermelon is really quite noticeable. It was something new for my palate but I surprised myself by not hating it.
Quattro Formaggi - Php300
As the name suggests, it's composed of four (quattro) Italian cheese: FETA, Gorgonzola (Blue Cheese), Parmesan and Mozzarella. I've tried this pizza before but they substituted one cheese for Cheddar (which is kind of tacky), good thing Chef Gelo made sure that only Italian cheese makes it to this pizza. Also, he tells us he this isn't quite like normal QFs. Instead of layering the cheeses together, what they did is distribute the cheese around the pizza so you get to try the four cheeses individually.
Putanesca - Php180
Other restaurants refer to this dish as Spaghetti ala Putanesca. This is a very popular dish in Italian homes and also the chef's favorite. This was served in brothels a long, long time ago and meant to entrap estranged men from leaving the brothel (wh*re trap). It certainly gets the job done, in our case. I can hardly get off my seat when we tried it.
Cannelloni Al Forno - Php250
This was one of my very favorites. There's something about greens that I like (I'm a big fan of Pesto dishes too) so out of everything they served to me, I must be most obsessed about this dish. I can't explain it (I only watched the fourth season of Masterchef US to see Italian Luca Manfe win) but I can explain what I feel about it having it: BLISS.
Mindanaoan Irene loved this, I did too. Rich and succulent flavors. As you can see in the picture, it wasn't served traditionally. Instead, it's served with a pool of its sauce around it.
Meatball Pasta - Php280
Pretty self-explanatory. This dish obviously reminded me of lady in the tramp. Lol.
OssoBucco - Php550
If I was ordering a full coursed meal, I would probably still order this as my main course. The beef was so tender and came apart at the slightest urging (proof of well prepared tender meat) and the marrow was marvelous to the bone (ha, pun!)
Spumone - Php150
The dessert was gone in a matter of seconds, even though I was relatively full when we got to this course. The upper layer is sponge cake and the lower is cookie. Mango syrup and Caramel are swirled around.
My Next Meal Plan / Must try this combination!
- Formaggio di Carozza (Apertivo)
- Caprese Salad (Insalata)
- Parmesan Crusted Salmon (Main)
- Panacotta Trio (my favorite Italian dessert)
** as you can see, I prefer light proceedings for my evening
Drinks
They serve soft/frizzy drinks, beer, water, coffee, and Italian Vino.
Warning
This place has one of the best food in town + good service to par. However, my mother had a meeting there and complained that they didn't allow Credit Card transactions, meaning the customer has to travel to the nearest bank they know of (SM City?) just to get cash and pay the bill. The prices of the items in their menu average Php300 so they should've for seen that their target crowd would sometimes pay by swipe. But don't let this stop you though, instead, take my warning and make sure to have some cash on you.
